An Introduction to Auris Audio
Pictured: Auris Bayadere 3 Turntable in Red, with EON Power Supply.

Auris Audio, founded in 2013 by Milomir Trosic, has consistently aimed to satisfy the needs of the most discerning audiophiles, delighting both their ears and eyes. This may sound like marketing jargon, but once you see and hear an Auris product, you'll understand their perspective.

That leads me conveniently to what many of you must be asking yourselves – is this yet another cheap Chinese-made brand that no one has heard of? Well, firstly, let me just say that there is nothing wrong with ‘Chinese’ made products. Returning to Auris Audio, they are designed and manufactured in… drum roll… Serbia. Yes, I couldn’t place it on the map either, but Google is your friend.

Although Auris Audio makes a range of electronic components, I will be cherry-picking a couple of turntables from their varied selection. The Auris turntable range does not start at a basement-budget price or at a level where you would need to take out a second mortgage. Therefore, if you’re eager to explore vinyl for the first time or return to it without going overboard.

A great starting point would be the MYSTiK model. It comes pre-fitted with the classic Audio Technica AT-95 MM cartridge. The MYSTiK plinth is made of an advanced Kerrock® composite material that feels cool to the touch and is reassuringly solid and heavy in construction. The turntable features a beautifully engineered tonearm – the T809. This tonearm has an ingenious design that effectively dampens vibrations, reducing unwanted movement and allowing the turntable to reveal more of the music hidden in those microscopic grooves.

The attention to detail extends to how the motor is carefully integrated into the chassis, using specialised rubber spacers and adjustable rubber feet. This design further reduces vibrations transmitted to the chassis by the motor, with the rubber feet helping to isolate the turntable from external vibrations. It also features a durable Bronze Main Hub Bearing that provides a longer lifespan and greater reliability compared to traditional brass, ensuring optimal performance for years to come.

Oh, and there's a 33/45 switch! Not that it’s any trouble to manually change the speed. And of course, I waited right until the end to tell you that the price you would have to pay for all that musical delight is a mere $1665. That was the cherry on top of the cherry!
Moving on to Auris’s ‘higher-end’ range of turntables, they offer the ‘Bayadere’ series. Here, they have three models, and if you only had a quick glance at all three, you might think they all look similar, and their nomenclature doesn’t help, as they are called Bayadere 1, 3, and 5.

However, I would say that they have a ‘family’ resemblance to each other, and as you increase in number, the chassis’ (try saying that after a couple of wines!) also increases. The Bayadere 1 has one chassis, the 3 has two with a ‘filling’ in between, and the 5 has three plus two fillings, along with an out-board motor assembly.

Some of you with an inquisitive nature are probably wondering about the origin of the name 'Bayadere' and where it comes from. Is it derived from some mythic Serbian historical figure or event? No, you would be mistaken (as I was). In fact, it is ‘derived from the Portuguese word "bailhadera."’ Bayadere is a European term that captures the vibrant essence of the female dancers from India. These dancers, dressed in striking striped costumes, were chosen to be married to deities and performed captivating dances during temple rituals. In Indian temple worship, dance and music hold a sacred role in the daily ceremonies dedicated to the deities.

Inspired by the fabric of the Devadasi's dresses, the Auris Bayadere 3 emerges as a potent musical temple, according to Chatgpt. That went slightly off track, but I feel better for knowing that nonetheless.

So, returning to the three models within the Bayadere range:

The Auris Bayadere turntables mainly vary in their build, materials, and price. The Bayadere 1 is the entry-level model, the Bayadere 3 is the mid-range "sweet spot," and the Bayadere 5  is the top-tier, ultimate performance model. All are high-end, belt-driven turntables with premium construction, but the higher models use more advanced materials like Kerrock® and specialised alloys, feature heavier platters, and are designed for more dedicated audiophiles, commanding considerably higher prices.

For those of you wanting to compare the features of the three Bayadere models, see the Appendix below.

So, in conclusion, if you’re thinking about buying a turntable soon and want something a bit different and unique, why not visit one of our three retail branches in Auckland, Wellington, or Christchurch and speak to one of our experienced sales staff? We would love to help you discover something that could bring you lifelong enjoyment of music.
